"Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
So, I have played Talisman for countless hours, but recently I had a weird though.
What is really the difference between Visit a space and Encounter a space?
A good example is visiting requires you to (or allows you to) interact with the "denizen" or "services" on the space.
But that doesn't explain the quest "visit the black knight."
What role does the word "visit" play here?
and that's what I would love to be explained here.
Just like how the Cat Burglar has the term "visit" in her second ability:
"Whenever you visit a card or space that allows you to buy an Object,"
But then her first ability says:
"Whenever you encounter a space with 2 or more cards,"
What role does the "visit" do here that is different from "encounter"?
Another example, how the Thief says "visit market, market day (etc.)."
How do you visit an event?? Market day is not a space but an event.
What makes that different from just saying "Visit the Desert?"
Nowhere in the 4th rulebook is the term "visit" explained.
I checked. It is used 5 times in the rulebook as a passing word. Like if I am supposed to get what "visit" means.
A good question that would make a good example to answer this problem would be this:
Let's say you have a character (custom maybe, irrelevant) that has an ability that would say:
"whenever you visit a space, gain 1 fate"
When would that apply? And what spaces would fulfill the criteria of "visit" here?
Anyone got a good answer?
Talisman is an EXTREMELY word specific game, using a word like "visit" and not explain its meaning is a slap to the face of someone like me who obsesses about rule specific things like this.

Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
I think you can encounter the space (proceed with its instructions), but I don't know if there's visiting the space - you can visit a specific card or denizen of space.
Anyway i think it doesn't really matter and both mean doing what written instructions say.

Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
I think you answered yourself by analyzing the Cay Burglar and Thief:
"visit market, market day (etc.)."
I never had in my hands english instruction, but to me it looks like you can visit things even when you are not the one who encounter them. Someone else can draw a market day card and you still can visit it - because card say so!
"whenever you encounter a space, gain1 fate.
If you are not the one who draw a marked day it does not apply
"whenever you visit a space, gain 1 fate"
it apply always
But keep in mind that this is my first interpretation of the case It might be very wrong.

But analysing the thief and cat burglar, what makes it different from saying "Encounter" over "Visit"? A game cannot use these terms synonymously without explanation.the MackaN pisze: ↑sobota 14 wrz 2024, 10:49 I think you answered yourself by analyzing the Cay Burglar and Thief:

Visit an event feels weird. How do you visit an occurrence that is not a place or being? Do you visit a pestilence?
Added in 1 minute 27 seconds:
The game states on market day "visit" and you "visit strangers and places. That makes it beyond the denizen and space instructions.
The game refuses to elaborate on this.

Maybe they use "visit" to add more flavor to the game and to just avoid to many repeats of word "encounter".

Also, how would you interprete "when revealed" cards appear?
Often lunar cards have this

Just do exactly what it says. When you draw a card, you reveal it - before you even encounter them. Imo even if you discard it with prothetess' ability, the card is first revealed.

Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
Thanks.
A problem we had yesterday was this:
Gf lands on draw 3 space.
She draws in this order:
Event, lunar event, stranger
Fool's gold was the event and night of the pumpkin king lunar event.
It was night before she drew.
On your opinion, how would the time card be flipped here? Isn't it normal that the time card can only be flipped once by events? But lunar events and cards that strictly says flip it to day or night takes priority?

Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
According to rulebook:
What happens if you draw 2 lunar events with opposite sides of time card? I don't know
and a little lower, in Lunar Events:Whenever a character draws one or more Events during his turn, before he encounters any cards, he must flip the Time Card over to the other side.
So no matter how many events there are, you flip the time card once and if there is a lunar event, then the side of time card is indicated. Imo lunar events have priority.Instead of requiring players to flip the Time Card over to its other side, each Lunar Event indicates which side the Time Card must be flipped to.
What happens if you draw 2 lunar events with opposite sides of time card? I don't know

Cards are always drawn in the order. Flip in the order. Side of time card after second flip stays.
As above

In my opinion:
You may encounter space of tavern ending the movement there.
You may visit space of tavern rolling a dice there.

Please note that rules (quoted in my previous post) say to flip when character draws one or more event cards, so it is one flip, no matter how many event cards you draw.Budowniczy Mostów pisze: ↑poniedziałek 16 wrz 2024, 11:46 Cards are always drawn in the order. Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
I.
Regarding the Time Card flipping, I agree with @Budowniczy Mostów. In the situation mentioned by @frolof, I'd personally play like this:
step 1: I'd flip the Time Card according to the rules (one or more Event cards present among the cards drawn = Time Card flipped to its other side)
step 2: I'd encounter each Event card according to the general game rule (= if there's more than 1 card with the same number, they are encountered in the order they were drawn)
step 3: I'd flip the Time Card AGAIN, according to the rules regarding Lunar Events (= the exact side that the Time Card should be flipped to is indicated on each Lunar Card)
This, in my opinion, is the right way to encounter the cards in the situation described by @frolof.
II.
Regarding the difference between encounering and visiting the space:
- you encounter a given space when you "land" on it
- you visit a given space when using any "services" available there (blacksmith, monk, healer, prayer etc.)
III.
Regarding the case when you draw 2 Lunar Event cards with different sides of the Time Card indicated on each card, I'd:
- flip the Time Card according to the rules BEFORE encountering any of these cards
- flip the Time Card AGAIN (if necessary, of course) after encountering the first Event
- flip the Time Card ONCE MORE (again, if necessary) after encountering the second Event

Regarding visiting, I am still not sure if I get that, since you "visit" some events (market day example) and black knight is considered a visit. Temple, graveyard and chapel is a visit too.
So, theoretically, you could say "visit an enemy" and "visit the plains"?

Re: "Visit space" and "Encounter space". what is the difference??
My take on this is that they're both the same thing. To visit a thing you must encounter it, you can't encounter a card without visiting it, and for obvious reasons you encounter - for example - enemies, and not visit them. And in most (if not all) of that cases you can swap the word "visit" with "encounter", and the meaning will be still the same. The only possible difference I can see is that "visit the Black Knight" sounds better than "encounter the Black Knight", but still that two sentences virtually mean the same.
And have a nice song:
